Meet the Board

JC Garbutt

Chair

Favorite Tree: White Oak
Why I Volunteer: I love nature and trees.  Being able to help expand awareness of the wonders of trees and the importance of protecting them makes volunteering with Grand Trees a grand experience!

Connie McAdams

Treasurer

Favorite Tree: Maple
Why I Volunteer: I joined the board because I wanted to meet all the special trees (and their people) that we get to visit all around the county. I also enjoy our hikes and other special events and activities where we get to share our enthusiasm about trees.

T. Sharon Garbutt

Secretary

Favorite Tree: All of Them!
Why I Volunteer: I volunteer with GTOC because it is such a great way to meet wonderful trees and wonderful people who share my love of trees!

Gary Simpson

Calendar Creator

Favorite Tree: Southern Live Oak for its unique aesthetic appearance
Why I Volunteer: Serving on the GTOC Board, I can move my nature photos off the computer hard drive and into the annual Naturally Chatham calendar to raise funds for this organization that seeks to enhance people’s appreciation and advocacy for trees and preserving Chatham’s natural environment.

Jim Sughrue

Board Member

Favorite Tree: Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus Virginiana
Why I Volunteer: I’ve been an avid vegetable and flower gardener for 36 years but over the last 10 years I’ve developed more interest in some of the largest and oldest living organisms on the planet – TREES. I’ve started to notice trees, study trees, ID trees, plant trees, enjoy trees, and use trees. I value and appreciate trees so when I heard about GTOC I had to become involved.

Philip Cox

Board Member

Favorite Tree: American Beech
Why I Volunteer: I volunteer with GTOC because I like trees and learning more about them in the landscape. It’s also fun to find champion trees (even if they are only 20 ft tall!) and talk with their owners about the history of that tree.

Board Member

Favorite Tree: White Oak. White oaks provide such a wide range of benefits to the world–food for many animals, living quarters for quite a few and a high-quality wood for furniture and structures, plus its graceful beauty and stately presence.
Why I Volunteer: Being a board member allows me a chance to help educate people about trees, to help foster attitudes favorable to protecting trees and their associated ecosystems, and work with some like-minded people spending time in the woods or talking about trees!
