About GTOC

Mission

The Mission of Grand Trees of Chatham is to increase public understanding and appreciation of Chatham County’s valuable and irreplaceable trees.  This mission is accomplished through educational programs and an awards program honoring notable County trees.

History

The program was initiated in 2009 by a small group of Chatham County citizens with a love of trees. The Chatham County Commissioners created an all volunteer committee to administer the program.  GTOC is now an independent non-profit with close ties to the NC Cooperative Extension—Chatham County Center.

What We Do

Grand Trees of Chatham encourages stewardship of all of our County’s trees and provides information and training on proper tree care and planting techniques. Our organization highlights the value of trees in our environment and in our communities through two main programs:

Grand Trees of Chatham Awards Program
A tree recognition component that seeks to identify and award outstanding Chatham trees. Trees are nominated by Chatham citizens with the approval of the tree’s owner. Learn more and view the directory of Chatham County trees.

Public Education Program
An education component which seeks to educate Chatham citizens on the value and care of trees through workshops, public events, and community outreach.
