Reflections on trees….

Did you know that there are about 220 native species of trees in Chatham County! The Dwarf Hawthorn, maturing at 3-8 feet tall, is likely our smallest tree. The Tulip Poplar, up to 120 feet or more in height, and the White Oak and the Southern Red Oak, commonly reaching 100 feet or more in height and with circumferences often exceeding 20 feet, are our largest trees. An interesting fact is that large, old trees absorb more CO2 than young, faster growing trees because their leaf surface area is so much larger even though their leaves aren’t as efficient in converting sunlight to glucose as the leaves in young trees! Keep your old trees!
